The images you see on internet pages and the photos you take with your mobile phone are examples of digital images. It is possible to represent this kind of image using matrices. For example, the small image of Felix the Cat

can be represented by a 35 × 35 matrix whose elements are the numbers 0 and 1. These numbers specify the color of each [pixel]. the number 0 indicates black, and the number 1 indicates white. Digital images using only two colors are called binary images or boolean images.

The (static) figure below shows an enlarged version of the image of Felix the Cat, where each square represents a pixel. Its corresponding matrix is presented next.


The figure below is interactive. Click on any pixel to switch its color. To view the corresponding matrix, press the button “View Matrix”. To view or remove the grid that encloses each pixel, press the button “Toggle Grid”. Finally, click on the icons to replace the picture being displayed!
